Poroshenko wants to create National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre
Preventing future cyber threats is key for Ukrainian government institutions. This is why Ukraine's President signed a decree on June 7 forming a National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre.
The institution will be headed by Oleksandr Turchynov – the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine. Besides, the members of the centre will include the first deputies or deputies of the Defence Minister; the chief of the General Staff; the chiefs of the Security Service, Foreign Intelligence Service, National Police, National Bank of Ukraine; and other public institutions that have charge of the cyber security issues.
The National Cybersecurity Coordination Center will be a working agency of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine.
The overriding priorities of the National Cybersecurity Coordination Center will include the analysis of the cyber security state; preparedness in combating the latest cyber threats; the implementation of legislation to safeguard state electronic information resources, classified information and critical information infrastructure and information against cyber threats.
As reported before, in December 2015, the Ukrainian power company Prykarpattyaoblenergo reported hackers carried out a cyber attack in the Ivano-Frankivsk region (western Ukraine). Consequently, 700,000 residents were left without electricity. Ukraine's Security Service said on December 28 that it was the Russian special services that attempted to destroy the energy complex computer network.
